Understanding Your Birth Chart (Kundli)

A birth chart, also known as a Kundli in Vedic astrology or a natal chart in Western astrology, is a snapshot of the heavens at the exact moment and location of your birth. This astronomical map plots the precise coordinates of the Sun, Moon, and planets across the zodiac.

The Difference Between Western and Vedic Astrology

While both systems use the same sky, they use different coordinate systems. Western astrology utilizes the Tropical Zodiac, which is locked to the Earth's seasons and the vernal equinox. Vedic astrology (Jyotish) utilizes the Sidereal Zodiac, which is locked to the fixed background stars. Due to the precession of the equinoxes, the two systems are currently separated by about 24 degrees—a difference known as the Ayanamsha.

What are Divisional Charts (Vargas)?

In Vedic astrology, the main D1 (Rasi) chart is only the beginning. The zodiac signs are mathematically subdivided into smaller harmonic fractions to create "Divisional Charts" (Vargas). The most important is the Navamsha (D9), which divides each 30° sign into 9 parts. The D9 chart reveals the hidden strength of planets, marital karma, and your soul's destiny.

Vimshottari and Yogini Dashas

Dashas are planetary time periods that activate specific areas of your chart. The Vimshottari Dasha is a 120-year cycle based on the precise degree of the Moon in its birth Nakshatra (lunar mansion). The Yogini Dasha is a highly accurate 36-year cycle often used alongside Vimshottari to pinpoint the timing of major life events.
